You often hear:
āI donāt need advertising. My clients come through word of mouth.ā
And itās true ā when a satisfied client talks about you, itās a wonderful reward.
But relying solely on word of mouth to keep your salon running is like building a house⦠without a proper foundation.
š Word of mouth is the resultĀ of good work ā not a strategyĀ in itself.
š 1. Word of mouth offers no consistency or growth guarantee
The problem? Itās:
slow, especially at the beginning,
unpredictableĀ (you may get three referrals one month, then none the next),
beyond your control.
You donāt choose the timing, the message, or the audience.
š A solid business canāt grow effectively on āmaybeā and āsomeone mentioned you.ā
š 2. You leave your visibility to chance
Nowadays, when someone hears about you, what do they do?
They search for you on Google, look at your website, and check your Instagram or Facebook page.
And if they find nothing? Or if itās outdated, unclear, or inconsistent?
They move on.
š Word of mouth opens the door, but you have to show whatās behind it.
š ļø 3. Marketing doesnāt mean aggressive ads
We often think marketing means:
spending a fortune,
being pushy or āsalesy,ā
running endless promotions.
In truth, a good strategy is about:
showcasing your workĀ (before/after, videos, reviews),
sharing your storyĀ (your journey, values, method),
building trustĀ (professional photos, client testimonials, consistent visuals),
staying connectedĀ (useful posts, tips, newslettersā¦).
š And all of that can be done at little or no cost.
šÆ 4. Marketing helps you choose your ideal clientele
When your communication is clear and consistent, you:
attract people who share your values,
highlight what makes you unique,
and filter outĀ requests that donāt suit your business.
š Good marketing doesnāt try to sell to everyone ā it brings in the right people for you.
⨠In short
Yes, word of mouth is valuable. But itās not a strategy ā itās a reward.
A true marketing strategy gives you:
more control,
more consistency,
more peace of mind.
And most importantly: it helps you build a loyal, informed, and aligned clientele.
